Hi everyone,
Was a good boy this weekend, so treated myself to starting the second of my three Stormtroopers. These are the 1/12 Bandai figure kits and I just had to customise at least one of them.
So, I decided I wanted to do something that could be a Storm Commando - something similar to the style of Commander Cody from the prequels but using the Classic Stormtrooper armour as the base. I also wanted to add some colour.
So, after a brief spell doing some research, I decided that the main changes to the stock kit would be:
• Helmet modifications to resemble Commander Cody (visor and comms equipment) • Some small armour mods (additional comms equipment, ammo pouches, etc) • Backpack (some sort of backpack to carry heavy equipment, ammo, etc) • Macrobinoculars (or as near as I can get!)
I also decided on using a combination of `German Uniform` and `Khaki Grey` Vallejo paints as he would be deployed in a forest/jungle setting. I also plan to fix his position, so will be gluing parts together.
Didn`t take long to get started and here`s the first part, his modified helmet. I have used some Wave parts for the comms equipment and the visor is made from some styrene plus some parts from an old AMT Reliant kit.
I am not undercoating on purpose as the paint will naturally rub off the glossy surface underneath to give a weathered effect. Once it has all been posed, I will add a wash to darken up shadows, etc and probably fix the colour somehow.
Here it is put on the standard armour - can`t wait to start on the modified one. |

So - pauldron or not?
Was thinking as this is a special environment unit they might use the pauldrons like the Sandtroopers do, but I am up in the air about its practicality - especially in an environment with lots of undergrowth. |

Damn it! Must have forgotten to click post, as replied to your original one.
Anyway...
Liking the look although I thought it was Boba Fett when I first saw it with that green. How about a dotty camo pattern to break it up a bit more?
I`d say go with the pauldron. It looks cool and at the end of the day that`s all that counts! |

Well, shock horror - I actually had some spare time this Easter!
So I cracked on with the Storm Commando. Still up in the air about the pauldron, but we`ll see.
Anyway, I have added a backpack. I didn`t want something as complex as the Sandtrooper so have tried to go for a look that resembles the Scout backpack. I moved the thermal detonator, as I have plans for this area in the final build. I am also changing the black undergarment to a brown one. Paint is a bit messy on that, but this will be tidied up later.
I have also given it a wash with GW`s Reikland Fleshshade to dirty it up a bit.
Any guesses to what kit parts I used for the backpack?

Coming on nicely there... Looking forward to the rest of his build (and the random `80s rock references!)

At my usual glacial pace thanks to the arse-end of the academic year and all the prep and marking that entails ...
However, I have purchased a Hasbro Black Series 6" Sandtrooper in the hope that I can use some of the detailing it has to scratch build pouches, pauldron, etc as this Commando is a hybrid of a Scout and Sandtrooper.
Here is the Commando with the Hasbro pauldron: I actually really like it now I see it in situ - not sure whether to scratch build my own or just use this one (with some clean up and detailing):
Here is the Hasbro Sandtrooper - not a bad action figure although his big fat gun was bent and is almost impossible to rectify (all the weapons are bigger than those that come with the Bandai kit). I intend to use green stuff to make ammo pouches and other things for the Commando`s belt.
Here is my scratch built Commando macrobinoculars - the core is a gun from a Star Fury kit with Wave bits and 1/35 tank tracks for detailing. Need to think about the base colour, but it fits nicely in his hand as well as when he holds it up to his visor.
That`s all for now, so might get this done before the end of the year ... lol

He`s really taking shape and I can`t wait to see the finished trooper. I understand the slow pace, life has this real bad habit of getting in the way doesn`t it? Annoying to hear that the weapons from the Hasbro trooper were irreparably bent that`s just f`ing typical isn`t it? Love the macrobinoculars.

Thanks!
I noticed that the Hasbro Black Series Sandtrooper has a fiver off at Forbidden Planet now - typical!
Anyway, a tiny bit of progress in that I have added some more detailing to the shoulder pads to beef them up a bit and have started assembly on the arms.
Need to consider pose now as I want to fix it and cover the joints with green stuff to make them look less toy-like.
Anyone guessed what the backpack is made from? |
