Re: Fallout 3 Vault Dweller

Hi everyone.

As this year will be my third year at Comic Con, I decided that I may as well go in character (instead of grumpy nerd Dad, which is my usual costume).

As a massive Fallout fan, I figured that the Armoured Vault Suit would be a relatively easy one to do, so I figured let`s turn it into a build thread as most of the forums, tutorials, etc I have seen around this subject are US-based and I wanted to document my UK experience!

First off, what is the Armoured Vault Suit? More information can be found here: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Armored_Vault_101_jumpsuit

On the face of it, it`s just a blue boiler suit with some boots and armour, right? Well yes, but once you get going on the research, there are so many more considerations. Here is a general list of items that need to be sourced or built:

Modified blue boiler suit (Ended up with a Royal Blue utility suit from eBay).

Combat boots (picked up from Golding Surplus in Canterbury)

Fingerless leather gloves (also from Golding)

Shoulder and other armour *UPDATE* - Metal signs, second-hand knee pads and leather scraps, etc

Various straps and ammo belts *UPDATE* - now got a variety of worn and old belts, etc

Pip-Boy 3000 (all done!)

Roving Trader Hat (+5 Barter - basically a US-Army cap with biker goggles)

AER9 Laser Rifle *UPDATE* Ran out of time for this idea, ended up with a cheap toy gun (not happy about that, but don`t really have a choice).

Other props *UPDATE* Have sourced some caps, a hip flask, keyring with keys and screwdriver

So this will be my main thread, but I will also try to do individual threads for specific props that go with this costume. Pics soon!

Picked up various aged leather ammo belts, a Sam Browne and other bits and pieces from the local WW2/Military event this weekend. Shame it was the last one ever :( Lots of the stalls were terribly over-priced, but I managed to find some real bargains! Will start posting pics as soon as I have the main Vault Jumpsuit.

Glad to see there`s another Fallout fan in the club! Are you going for the Vault 101 suit or are you going to be a survivor of one of the less fortunate vaults? Good to see that you are going for the full armoured jump suit, it will definitely be an outstanding outfit when completed.

I have found this on instructibles.com (one of my favourite websites), which could help your cause with the AER96. There are even loads of tutorials about removing laser diodes from a DVD burner to create your own burning laser...

I will be following this with interest. And remember, Don`t feed the Yao Guay!

Figured I would have one of the less well known Vaults (possibly one not listed), that way I can accommodate any inconsistencies :)

I have some Illustrator plans for the AER96 - it`s huge! Instructibles is great - spotted some Bobbleheads on there too.

I need to speak about something else.

I like your way of thinking. I think there are only 120 (or 112 I can`t remember) vaults in the Fallout universe.

Do you need to speak to me about something else, or just to speepak about something else in general as this project is doing your nut in?

For those of you not following on Facebook, here`s an update on the Vault Dweller main costume.

Given it was a sunny day yesterday I figured I might as well crack on with the main pauldron. Now, I know this is not anything like the `Armoured Vault Suit` from the game, but I have been seeing several Fallout cosplayers do this and there are instances in the game (especially in New Vegas) where this type of improvised armour can be seen (Nightkin, Marked Men, etc) so I thought I would do something similar.

The main piece is a novelty tin plate from an Australian seller on eBay (was cheaper than the UK ones!) - I had thought about using a Fallout Shelter sign but couldn`t find one within my limited budget and figured this was in the spirit of the game anyway. The license plate was attached using small zip ties and I did want an older-style Nevada plate, but couldn`t find one for a decent price. I picked this up at a recent military show where choice was limited, so it will have to do.

The leather strap is from an old Sam Browne belt set with some custom leather work to attach it to the tin plate; I also hot glued some foam padding underneath for some sort of comfort! It will need final adjustment when I eventually get hold of the main overall. I have since added some rubber edge trim (the sort you use for PC modding) to the outer edge of the licence plate to make it a bit safer and convention-safe.

This is now sat outside getting some natural weathering :)
