Re: Alun`s Build

I made a small tactical error at the weekend.  I will explain....

For the build I was going to do one of the Dragon Iron Man kits and had selected Igor for the build.  But my daughter (who is 4) was looking at the boxes and asked why they were out.  Explained I was choosing which one to build next and she asked if she could pick one.  Without thinking I said that of course she could and we started to look in the boxes.  After several "no", because the contents were boring grey, she looked in Igor who is a pale blue and seemed to like that one.  But there was one more and her eyes lit up, and I got a "has to be this one Daddy!".  So here is my build and the reason she chose this will be pretty obvious.

Mark XXI Suit, otherwise known as Midas.

And now the reason that it got chosen:

Yep, all the sprues and gold plated.  To a 4 year old this must look amazing.  Actually to me it looks pretty amazing as well.  But bit scary as some of the sprue attachment points look like they might result in a missing spot once they are cut clean.

Couple of close-ups:

Pretty shiny!!!

Never actually done a kit like this where I`ve wanted to keep the plating.  Should be interesting!

Finally the painting instructions:

There are some areas which need painting, some in red but looks like a wash or thin paint would be the way to go to keep the gold coming through.

Will be finishing off Starboost first but this will be next up in hopefully a couple of weeks at most.

Made a bit of a start tonight and good progress.

Few things to note.

Firstly, my fear that each connection would remove the plating hasn`t totally come true.  They`ve designed it so that the sprue attaches on the back of the part so on the whole there isn`t a missing spot once cleaned up.  Where there is a spot missing a part goes over the top.

So here is the top half of the body mainly assembled. A hole for the arc reactor opened up as well.

Not easy to photograph to be honest.  Camera found it really hard to focus on it.

Second thing to note is that not all the parts are plated.

So the hands are a horrible orange.  Matching the colour to really high gloss gold finish is not going to be that easy... Alcad would be one way but I can`t spray with an airbrush so going to have to look for a really high gloss gold spraycan.

And the eyes are lit up.  After all the fussing with the Starboost I`ve got it sussed now fitting it.  Needs sealing up a little bit underneath and I`ll finish the inside with silver tape as at the moment the light is quite golden, although that fits quite nicely.

One major advantage of the plating is that it`s an excellent light block so cuts out a big step in the process.

Does seem a bit daft to go to the trouble of plating so much - but not the hands. Too complex a shape to use the process on maybe ?

The double trouble is the part is vinyl, which is probably why they didn`t plate it. So matching it will, I suspect, be pretty much impossible. We`ll have to see. Trip to Halfords to try and find something bright and shiny.

Bit more progress last night on the arms.

Found that the lower arm is one piece and the sprue connection points will show. Might be some creative way to hide those missing spots of plating.  Also found a part missing.  It`s not a major issue as it is the connector which holds the left arm in place.  It can be glued in directly but still it`s a bit of a pain.  Will see about getting a replacement though.

LED runs up the right arm into the hand to light that up.  Pretty simple job.  You can also see the delightful orange hands which blend beautifully with the plating.

Having to hold the left arm in place here as this is what the missing connector would have done.

Those hands look ridiculous!!!
From what I remember the other dragon kits don`t have vinyl hands......do they?

Was thinking of leaving them like that ;)

All the hands on the ones I`ve done are vinyl but think they could have done these as solid plastic so they could be plated.
