Re: SFM:uk Attendance at Shows

As some of you will know the site had a table at the South Cheshire Militaire show a couple of weeks ago and I just want to firstly thank those people who made the journey there and brought items along for the display.

Unfortunately I got an email afterwards from one of the show organisers to say that the table wasn`t really utilised in the way that is intended for club displays and there was a bit too much selling going on. I understand they had a complaint(s) from those with trade stands who have to pay for their tables and therefore they had to do something to keep them on side.  I suspect otherwise it would have gone ignored.

But this got me thinking and I`ve decided to tighten up on our presence at shows and take the organisation of it back even if not actually attending, as well setting out some guidelines.  I`ve laid these out below.  This is open to comment and shouldn`t be interpreted as laying down the law.

1. All tables for shows should be booked through me.  I would be delighted for others to take the lead for shows but I want to know about it before anything is booked. I will designate a lead person for shows which I can`t attend and they will be in charge for the day.

2. The table should be used for a display of models and any models which are for sale (and where the show allows it) should be under the table. I will be booking smaller tables so that the display of models is denser in the future.

3. Everyone attending is expected to contribute significantly to the display and I will ask everyone who is attending to give a rough list of what they will be bringing.

4. Shows are a way of showcasing SFM:uk both through the display and interaction with the public.  So if you are attending be prepared to initiate discussions with people walking past, so no hiding behind the table.  We need more site members constantly and this is a good way of getting them.

I am currently working on some innovative new flyers and there will be some new branding coming soon.  I will have copies of flyers and table signs to send to the lead person at each show once this is completed.

At the site`s first ever outing at Crewe we won the best display, and I`d like to get back to that.

Appreciate feedback on this and hope you`ll agree with these guidelines.  I`m also hoping it will re-invigorate our displays at shows.

You mean like these ones: http://www.cafepress.com/sfmuk

That`s the old site logo (that`s the reason you might not have seen these before) and we currently have a concept for a new one which when done I`ll put out as shirts etc .  But I can`t expect everyone to buy one if attended a show, so will likely do some badges or similar which anyone attending can wear.

One of the things my wife commented on is kiddy appeal. we are always VERY popular with the kids. his is something we need to build on for sure. I felt the need for badges or something this time. and we deffo needed more leaflets, maybe some kind of funky sign.

For reference. I am going to doll up the plastic stands I bought. surface them properly and maybe even sci fi them up a bit. I am happy to make them available for other shows if we can sort out the logistics. having models at eye level is a good feature.

The lack of leaflets was my fault as I got the dates wrong and thought it was the following weekend.  We`ll be adding flyers to the website once they are done so anyone can download and print some.  Plus there will be a lead person for each show who will have to take responsibility for ensuring things like flyers and table signs.

I think it`s fair to say we all slightly zoned on this years show and lacked the organisation we`ve had in previous years.

I know that one year I had sweets for the table (those sherbet UFOs) but also remember being entirely sick of them by the end of the show.
