Bandai 1/12 Stormtrooper

James Porter » Mar 15 '16

hi folks,

well i started this bandai 1/12 stormtrooper and although it's nearly finished i have run into a few issues which i have listed here, generally though i can't fault the kit and i wanted to build this kit as a test bed to see how i would fair with the numerous other bandai star wars kits that i have sitting in my stash.

honestly, i'm not picking my nose!

i'm having some issues with his rear end, the rear section of his belt seem too short and are not meeting up properly... i noticed that there seem to be two additional belt sections left over at the moment, should i swap them out?

I'll look at mine tonight, but don't recall a gap although do seem to remember it being a bit of a wrestle to get them into place.  Could well be that a wrong part has been used at some point around the belt as there are multiple options and I know I took some incorrect parts for one build which caused me a lot of confusion because it wouldn't fit.

Will update later.

i had another look at my imperial friend's belt and took it apart and removed the holster which i don't really like the look of any way and reassembled the belt... it needed a lot more force ( no pun intended) but it eventually "clicked" into place and looks much better now.

when i get some time at the weekend i will add the decals although from what i have seen thus far a lot of them you don't actually need, e.g. the little black dots on the front of his mid torso region have the black come through from the part you insert earlier. from what i can see just the helmet and the grenade cylinder need decals.

Worst bit in my opinion is the back of the helmet and the seam that runs up the lower part.  Whatever you do that's going to notice unless you fill and paint it.

I'm thinking some extremely subtle washing into the panel lines and shadow areas might improve the overall look, but will see how it goes.

Been reading the posts on the 1/12th kits with interest as i've been umming and ahhing as to whether or not to start getting them.

Thinking i will, but first i got me a 1/48th Snowspeeder on the way, as i still am in hardware rather than figure mode.

Eric, i'm the same with regards to hardware but i thought i would start off easy and do a figure first to test the waters as it were.

since fine molds are no longer producing star wars kits and the revell ones are in odd scales and/or poorly detailed there isn't much else availalble without buying expensive resin kits.

Update time:

well he's not quite finished yet, i just need to add the decals and he is done... very simple and easy build.

Looking fighty fine!

Re hardware, what i'm seeing is that Bandai are worthy sucessors to Fine Molds with their new range of kits.

So i'm starting with the 1/48th Snowspeeder

I'm giving the 1/48th X-Wing a miss as i really don't need motorised wings and i want their 1/72nd version as i have the Fine Molds one, but in a SFMUK-themed green livery one with undercarriage down, and i want a more movie accurate in flight mode version.

Then its the 1/72nd Vaders fighter.

i have quite af ew of the bandai kits here waiting to be done, it's simply finding the time to do them in my case.

my next project will be another storm trooper figure but with a twist now that i have gained the confidence to work with the bandai kits.
