Re: I am Groot

So, still prevaricating on finishing Igor and got distracted again.  This time by the Guardians of the Galaxy kits.

Picked this one up off eBay for a decent price because the box had been damaged (like I care, it`s already been thrown out).

Didn`t take any pictures of the parts but it`s all vinyl except for Rocket`s gun.

Assembly is pretty simple although the plugs on Groot were really tight in their sockets and I trimmed them just a little bit to assist with the fit.  Were a few small gaps in some seams which was filled in before going any further.

One thing which is a bit annoying is that the base isn`t actually big enough for Groot and he hangs off the sides a bit.  Dragon didn`t actually supply a base for Igor so I suppose this is better than nothing.

Close up of Rocket.  Just need to fill the same gap around the jaw.

Close up of Groot:

So Groot got primed with black as I thought that would help with the shading and Rocket was done in classic grey.

Started working on Groot first.  Painted him all over with a dark brown-black and then blocked in the larger bark panels with a darkish brown.  This was then drybrushed with a tan colour and then finally on top of that with a dark flesh. Not sure if I`ve got it quite right and might be a little on the dark side. More mahogany than pine.

Only worked on the face and chest so far.

Closer view:

And close-up of his face:

Doesn`t look too bad a starting point compared to this image.

Texture isn`t quite a fine as the Hot Toys one.

Will dig out some scenic scatter for the green mossy bits.

More over the weekend I hope.

Right, Groot is basically done.  Really enjoyable and very happy with how he`s come out.

Now onto Rocket.

Onto Rocket.  He`s not as good as Groot in my opinion.  The detail in the fur is quite soft which makes it more difficult to bring out the detail, since it`s not there.  Instructions are for an orange jumpsuit (the Hot Toy is the same as well) but looking at the moving it looks more like a chammy leather.  Decided to go with the orange though simply to have a splash of colour and contrast with Groot, otherwise I run the risk of them looking quite similar.

Colours just blocked in at the moment.

Will start getting the light/dark patterns onto the fur next I think. Looking a bit flat at the moment.

That`s better!  Redid base colour and worked in the light and dark patches.

Bit more work on the face and think I`ve nearly got it.

Very few pictures on his back so had to watch the movie again. Not exactly a hardship. This is where I`ve got to.

OK, so basically done.  Just waiting to get some new decal papers to do a logo for the base.

Now back to Igor to try and get that big boy done.
