Aliens 1/72 APC and Marines

Gareth James » Nov 22 '15

'look, man, I only need to know one thing: where. they. are.'

With Halcyon's 1/35 APC only available with a re-mortgage I'm gonna have to settle for a much smaller version of the iconic bug stomper's prefered mode of transport.

I haven't tried anything in 1/72 scale since I was out of short trousers- but a magnifying light I picked up at the Telford show will hopefully give me some chance.

With the usual clean-up ou the way I'll be ready to prime and get going. Gonna see if I can angle the front wheels to give the thing a bit more interest. Will have to do my own decals as well as none supplied.

I'm also doing a 1/72 APC - the new one from Retrokit. Really nicely detailed, but spent the weekend just removing the pour spouts off the wheels on the lathe and then the massive one off the bottom of the body with the milling machine...

You'll need a shed load of patience and a good sanding end for your rotary tool to cut out the recesses for the headlights. It is a bit of a pain, but does look great when done. Just remember the tail lights are white as well and not red. Oh and don't forget about the lights on the side at the front. To be honest on my dropship dio, I just gouged holes and ran a couple of fibre optics for the tail lights (I hid them in the wheel arches).

Also are you going to try to fill and re scribe the tyre treads to make them movie accurate?

wasnt it Gizmoid that did the original 1/72 resin APC?  nThey do appear now and again..

As to figures there were the Leading Edge gaming minitures in pewter.. had a few of those sets years ago but they suffered from the usual gaming problem of oversize hands and weapons. still not too bad representations tthough.

These was a US company doing 1/35 figures and alternative designs and parts for the APC.. they also did Babylon 5 kits too but thier name escapes me att he moment.

It was Gonzoid originally did the 1/72 APC way back in the early 90's. The new Retro one has a lot more detail, and crucially, accurate wheels. I'll have to dig my original out of the attic and do a side by side.

The new marines are also really nice - if somewhat small for my aging eyes. Detail is very sharp for their size.

The retrokit APC is missing a couple of details- The roof searchlight and the grill in front of it, the towing anchors at the front on the vehicle and, like Marten mentions, the front lights are not recessed. The overall detail of the kit is good so it seems a bit churlish to harp on about these.

I've started to add the searchlight

Here's a rather dusty Halcyon APC to give some idea of size. Found this up in the loft and had totally forgot about it!!!! Bought it way back in '87 !!!

Don't want to argue :), but the Retro does have the searchlight, grill(separate) tow points (separate) and recessed headlights...

Ah I think we're at crossed purposes here - that's the Gonziod one you're building. The one I bought way back came with a photoetched grille for the searchlight. I think they didn't bother with that when it was re-released.

Your Halcyon APC looks in an even more sorry state than mine - I just dug it out and whilst being boxed up to keep the dust off, the gun turret had broken off somehow. Interestingly I noticed the other day the 2 sort of angled "shoulder pads" on the top had been stuck on round the other way to both the small ones I have. Then I just noticed yours is the same. this must have been an error in the Halcyon instructions!
