REVIEW: Battlestar Galactica Mining Ship from SFMuk Admin's blog

Produced by Avery Models and bought from Cult TV Man's excellent store, this cost me £18.00.

"That's cheap," you might be thinking but, really, I'd say it's a tad expensive.

You see, its only 7 inches long - reason being its in scale with the old Monogram Galactica kit. I'd just got one of these (thanks again Alun! No problem. Glad it found a good home. Alun) and the rather nifty idea of collecting an in scale rag tag fleet persuaded me to cave in and get one.

So what do you get?

A smallish box with quite a few tiny resin pieces, along with an incredibly informative instruction sheet that runs to 3 pages.

Building was a doddle as, with pieces that small and light, everything went together with superglue and no pining needed.

I had it washed, dried, assembled and primed in an hour. Yup, an hour.

That was possible by the resin needing hardly any scrubbing, no flash or pinholes present and the parts reacting immediately to the superglue. Too well actually - one of the feet went on cockeyed and I had the devils own job removing it. Once done, it was small but the detail (especially on the engine section) was amazing.

When primed it really looked great and I couldn't wait to paint. Again, the ‘Net really comes into it's own and I finally found a site with the original model being restored.

That was a shock - I'd always had it down as grey with red panels but its actually tan with orange. I tried to go the tan route but it looked pretty crap at that scale so went with washes of black over the white undercoat. Then it was heavily drybrushed with Skull White.

The panels were done with a nice and easy cheat. The ship was already weathered and highlighted - by mixing up an orange with Games Workshop red and yellow (which are notorious for being translucent), all I had to do was fill in the panels and the previous weathering showed through.

Had a fine old time with this kit. It's a shame its not bigger but, as I say, one of the appeals is that's in scale with the old Galactica.
